(2011 - ongoing)
ABOUT THE ARTWORK: The series Portals is an ongoing collection of mostly self portraits. The photographs invoke a sense of uncanny, often asking: am I really here? I work with shadows, reflections, and imprints, as well as practicing techniques such as long exposures to capture blur and ghost like traces. Portals convey a perpetual state of anxiety from hyper self awareness and flirts with a fantasy of disappearing all together.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: Jenny Magruder is a fine art photographer working with film and digital images to reveal glimpses of an unconscious mind. With a focus on self-portraits, her work is inspired by dreams, memories and fantasies and often conceals or alters the body itself. In 2012, Jenny was a Sony World Photography Awards Student Focus Finalist, and in 2013 she was shortlisted in the Professional Conceptual Category. Her work has been shown at Somerset House in London, Gallery R, and Pirate: Contemporary Art.
Jenny graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a BFA in Photography in 2012. From 2013-2019 she photographed throughout California while working in a film lab in Berkeley. Currently residing in Colorado, Jenny is working on a tangent project to her series Portals, made entirely with a Holga camera.
